power chucks are essential part of the automatic manufacturing process. Power chucks provide an even gripping force and their performance does not rely on the skill of the operator. The gripping power is provided by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders that cause the chuck's jaw to increase their grip on the work piece before the machining force can cause the workpiece to slip out.

Power chucks are used for processes that involve rotational motion. Censequently typical applications include turning, boring, drilling and grinding. There is a huge variety avaiable from small drill chucks to huge lathe chucks. The most common ones are 3-jaw, which are generally self centering. four-jaw chucks are also used and the jaws on those can be adjusted individually and can therefore be used to hold odd shapes as well as square and rechtangular shapes. In the case of power chucks, the jaws can be pneumatically or hydraulically operated. The type of chuck used in primarily depends on the production equipment being used, the workpiece size and the cutting forces involved.
Modern power chucks do not sacrifice versatility. Not only are they highly adjustable as to the amounts of power applied and the ways in which it is applied, but also in many cases they may be adjusted manually without disturbing their center location.
