Rapid Prototyping:

Rapid prototyping is a technology which relies on CAD/CAM and on various manufacturing techniques (Using metallic or nonmetallic materials as workpieces) to produce prototypes rapidly and at low cost, in the form of a solid physical model of a part (manufacturing engineering and technology-Serope kalpakjian, page 14)

Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)

Design for Manufacturing and Assembly is a natural outcome of developments which recognizes the inherent interrelationship amont the manufacturing of components and their assembly into a final product. (manufacturing engineering and technology-Serope kalpakjian, page 16)

Modular Fixturing

Modular fixturing is often used tfor small or moderate lot sizes, especially when the cost of dedicated fixtures and the time required to produce them are difficult to justify. Complex workpieces can be located within machines through fixtures produced quickly from a Standard components and can be disassembled when a production run is completed. Modular fixtures usually are based on tooling plates or blocks configured with grid holes or T-slots upon which a fixture is constructed. Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP)

Process planning is concerned with selecting methods of production: tooling, fixtures, machinery, sequence of operations and assembly. All of these diverse activities must be planned, which traditionally has been done by process planners.

When done manually, this task is highly labor-intensive and time-consuming and relies heavily on the experience of the process planner. Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) accomplishes this complex task by viewing the total operation as an integrated system, so that the individual steps involved in making each part are coordinated with others anda re performed efficiently and reliably.
